O.V. PALLADIN MEMORIAL MUSEUM
The Memorial Museum dedicated to academician O. V. Palladin the founder of the Institute was created in the apartment where he lived and worked (9 Leontovycha Street).
The expositions of Palladin Memorial Museum display his life course, creative scientific, pedagogical and social activity as well as the main stages of foundation and development of the Institute of Biochemistry and Ukrainian biochemical school in Kharkiv (1925–1931), Kyiv (1931–1941 and 1944–2000) and Ufa (1941–1944), where the Institute has been evacuated during the war.
The significant portion of the Museum exposition is dedicated to the 20 year-long period of activity of the All-Union Coordination Commission on the Problems of Nervous System Biochemistry headed by O. V. Palladin since 1953. During those years, six All-Union scientific workshops on the Nervous System Biochemistry were held in Kyiv, Erevan, Tartu, Tbilisi and Leningrad. The Coordination Commission worked out the general state strategy in neurochemical investigations. The fruitful research work conducted by the biochemists from Azerbaijan, Byelorussia, Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, Russian Federation and Ukraine provided for the wide world acknowledgement of acad. O. V. Palladin functional neurochemistry school due to its pioneer launching in the priority trends of neurochemical investigations as well as considerable scientific results. The International Neurochemical Congress for great achievements in neurochemical sciences (Strasbourg, 1967) declared O. V. Palladin the “patriarch of the world neurochemistry”; at the Second International Neurochemical Congress (Milan, 1969) he was awarded the Gold Medal of Milan Province.
The Museum exhibitions contain information regarding 150 Dr. Sc. and Ph.D. (Biology) trained by O.V. Palladin during more than six decades of his creative activity. There are also documents devoted to the Nobel Prize winners with whom O. V. Paladin collaborated in different periods: Albrecht Kossel, Frederic Joliot-Currie, George Hevesy, Hans Krebs, Arthur Kornberg.
The Institute and the Memorial Museum were visited by outstanding scientists and statesmen from Austria, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Iran, Canada, Cuba, Germany, Poland, USA, Turkey, Finland, France, etc.
In the memorial room there are some original paintings of the famous artists, among them the works by F. O. Vasyl’yev, M. P. Glushchenko, S. Yu. Zhukovsky, I. I. Levitan, V. D. Polenov, S. F. Shyshko.
Various materials evidence for the wonderful ability of O. V. Palladin for combining the scientific and administrative activity with educational work with young people. Nowadays Paladin Memorial Museum is the contact center for the members of the Biology Section of the Junior Academy of Sciences “Doslidnyk” (“Researcher”), including schoolchildren, and the University of junior biochemists with the scientists of the Palladin Institute.
Owing to extensive educational activity performed by the Memorial Museum, the Palladin Institute has become one of the well-known scientific and informational centers within International Scientific and Educational Youth Programs. One of them “The Teachers and School Students Investigate Plants in the Space” was included into the joint Ukrainian-American Space Experiment on Biology in 1996–1998.
